Alphington Community Builder – COVID-19 Update

A message from our community builder Claire.

Please note information given below is valid only on the date of publication, it may change.

I have been overwhelmed by the community spirit that Alphington has shown in supporting one another in the current COVID-19 crisis.  A big thank you to all the community leaders that came together last week to try and co-ordinate a community response to this crisis and to the community for keeping me updated.

I have put together this brief update to share with you what we have learnt about the support available in Alphington during this crisis. This information was correct at the point of writing but I recognise that we are in an unprecedented time of change and things move quickly.

Opportunities to Connect

Rainbow Trail
Lots of residents shared the idea of getting people to draw or paint a rainbow and put it in their window for children to spot when they are out for a walk.  What a lovely way to come together.  Lets see how many pictures we can spot by the end of the week.

Chattertots Toddler Group
There will be an opportunity to join in for a weekly sing a long session whilst Chattertots is closed.  All parents as part of the Chattertots group will have the opportunity to see this video and post their own.   Thank you to Lucy Williams for setting this up and keeping everyone connected.

Lucerne Penpal Scheme and “Hello Lovely Lucerne” Facebook group
There are two current exciting projects going on to keep the residents of Lucerne connected with the community during the crisis.
-Lucy Williams has set up a Pen Pal scheme where young people are writing and drawing pictures for Lucerne residents and the residents are being supported to write back.
– “Hello Lovely Lucerne” is a Facebook group that is sharing videos and pictures from children and young people with Lucerne Residents.   Thank you to Joey Willmot for setting this up.

Woodville Road residents connected at a street party last year and have an established WhatsApp group that they use to support one another.   They shared how they use their WhatsApp group for news in the street, arrange community events and are ready to support one another in the Covid-19 crisis.  Well done Woodville Road.

Have you set up a WhatsApp group to connect with your neighbours?  Let me know.  If you would like to do this and need support setting one up, then contact me.

Next Door
Next Door is a neighbourhood hub  for connecting with your community and to exchange useful information, goods and services.  Why not join your neighbourhood now at

Final Note
It saddens me to say but there are people who are using this crisis as a means to scam people.  I have been aware of a couple of scams that are currently operating.  The first where contacting people via messenger offering to signpost and support people to get aid from a UN scheme.  This was falsely offering financial aid.  Residents have also be contacted via house telephone and mobile offering support during the crisis and seeking personal information.  Please be careful during this time and look out for one another.
